Pollo y Gofres – Matty Metcalfe and Catherine Monnes return to our slice of tropical paradise here in Free Union to delight all with their ‘Americana – Latin American’ music. Sunday, August 9th, from 3 to 5:30 p. m. No cover.
Bio:
Multi-instrumentalist Matty Metcalfe (Legwarmers, Crewe d’Bayou) pairs up with avant-garde auteur Cathy Monnes (Sally Rose band) in an exciting new musical collaboration that takes listeners on a journey from the Mexican hill-country to Balkan seaports and back through dark-lit European speakeasies of the early 20th century. Their music is familiar, accessible, completely danceable, but equally exotic, esoteric, and entrancing.
Employing his digital accordion, Mr. Metcalfe creates soundscapes replete with Mariachi horns, spaghetti western harmonicas, Andean flutes, Klezmer clarinets, and New Orleans jazz organs and saxophones to the rhythmic undercurrent of his real-time drum loops. Ms. Monnes seamlessly harmonizes and accentuates the ambiance with cello and violin lines that swan dive in between melodies that listeners will come to remember in an entirely new context. Following in the footsteps of groups like Nuevelle Vague, Pink Martini, and Postmodern Jukebox, Pollo y Gofres reimagines modern-day lounge music from familiar songs, making each a completely new listening (and dancing!) experience. How such a fully orchestrated sound of bass, drums, horns, organs, strings, and occasional vocals can come from two musicians has to be seen to be believed!
